WiSE calls out for older people postal scheme nominations

Wetherby in Support of the Elderly (WiSE) is calling on residents to nominate older people to benefit from a popular postal scheme designed to reduce social isolation.

WiSE has already sent hundreds of pieces of handmade mail to ‘send a smile’ to over 60s in Wetherby and its surrounding villages.

But now the charity is looking for more people who might benefit from receiving the cheerful post as it looks to extend the scheme’s reach.

Melody Mills, Send a Smile Scheme coordinator, said: “The success of the scheme has already exceeded our expectations – we have sent more than 850 cards to date. We would now like to extend its reach beyond our own database of older people and build further partnerships with others.

“If you have a friend, neighbour of family member who’s 60 or over and you think they’d like to receive a handmade card to brighten up their day, we’d absolutely love to hear from you.”

To nominate a person over 60 to receive a card, email smile@w-ise.org.uk or phone 01937 588994. If you are an older person and would like to receive the post, you can also contact the charity.

WISE is a registered charity organisation part funded by Leeds City Council (LCC). Its aim is to improve quality of life for the over 60s by providing community based activities, information, help and support. It was recently given the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, which is equivalent to an MBE.
